We explore the intricacies of submarine communications, the challenges, technological breakthroughs, and, specifically, the pivotal role that Vitavox plays in bridging the communication divide beneath the waves.

Understanding Submarine Communication Challenges

Submarine communications are fraught with unique challenges, primarily due to the complex environment in which submarines operate. One of the fundamental challenges is the medium itself – water.

Water can damage and corrode the equipment, short out wiring, and damage speakers and microphones, resulting in unreliable, inefficient communication. Pressure at operational depth is another aspect that brings unique challenges to communications on a submarine. The extreme pressures experienced at these operational depths can damage communications equipment and render them unusable.

These challenges necessitate the development of specialised communication systems that can overcome these barriers, ensuring secure, reliable, and stealthy communication for submarines in their covert operations beneath the waves.

The wear and tear of the environment on this equipment, resulting in frequent replacement costs, and the more severe problem of equipment failure during operations are key problems that submarine crews and their commanders face.

Advancements like the submarine speaker developed by Vitavox are revolutionising submarine operations by enabling clear, audible commands that can withstand extreme pressure. These technologies ensure accurate, reliable, and durable underwater comms.

Their innovations have set a new standard, ensuring clear and reliable communication for submarines. This is crucial because it allows commanders and crew to effectively transmit commands, updates, and critical information.

Vitavox’s advancements have simplified and improved communications aboard submarines, making the work for submariners safer and more efficient.

Vitavox’s Revolutionary Contribution

Vitavox has made a groundbreaking contribution to submarine communications with its new loudspeaker technology. Unlike previous models, their loudspeaker is designed to withstand the extreme pressures of the deep sea while also functioning as a microphone. The compact submarine loudspeakers from Vitavox are known for their innovative design and functionality, but it’s their detailed features that truly make them stand out. These speakers are built to withstand harsh underwater conditions, thanks to their watertight and pressure-tight construction. Not only are they capable of functioning as loudspeakers, but they can also be used as microphones.

Crafted meticulously from high tensile naval bronze, these speakers are designed to handle pressure resilience up to 69 Bar. Despite their compact size, measuring less than 20cm in diameter and 15cm in height, they can be conveniently mounted in exposed areas such as the conning tower and dive chambers.

In addition to their physical features, these speakers have undergone rigorous testing to ensure they meet operational shock depth requirements. They’ve been subjected to x-ray testing to guarantee casting composition and integrity and are confirmed to be a direct replacement for previous models in terms of form, fit, and function. Weighing only 17.59kg, they’re lightweight yet robust, making them ideal for the demanding needs of submarine communications.

Testing and Certification Processes

During the development phase of this speaker, operational shock tests were conducted at Rosyth by QinetiQ to establish the specifications to establish a form, fit, and function replacement speaker for this application. Once the design was certified, production began.

Each Vitavox loudspeaker undergoes rigorous testing and certification processes to ensure the highest quality and performance. These processes validate both the form and function of the loudspeaker, guaranteeing that each unit meets the demanding performance standards required for sub-sea applications.

Firstly, the loudspeaker is X-rayed to verify the composition and integrity of the casting. This step ensures that the naval bronze housing is structurally sound and free of any flaws that could affect its performance.

Next, the loudspeaker is subjected to pressure testing up to 69 Bar. This intense testing replicates the extreme conditions that the loudspeaker may encounter in the depths of the sea, ensuring its durability and reliability in harsh environments.

Once these stringent tests are passed, the Vitavox loudspeaker is certified as a form, fit, and function replacement for the Permanent Magnet Loudspeaker. This certification makes it an ideal choice for submarine communication needs. This process offers peace of mind, knowing that the submarine communication equipment is certified for reliability and performance and will work when you need it most.

Features That Out-Perform Traditional Systems

Vitavox’s rigorous development, testing, and certification of this loudspeaker, designed specifically for submarine use, provides the following advantages over systems based on older technology.

  • Design: Compact and rugged, designed for the challenging submarine environment.
  • Acoustic Performance: High-quality sound production, which is essential for clear communication.
  • Durability: Built to withstand the extremely harsh conditions of underwater operations.

Case Study: Enhanced Internal Communication on Submarines

Tier 1 Defence Industry Prime contacted Vitavox in December 2010 because they required a fully functioning loudspeaker that could withstand pressure at depth outside the main pressure hull of the Astute Class submarines. The loudspeaker at that time had come from the USA and was not loud enough and had a number of other functional problems, including connectors open to seawater and an exposed magnet that attracted iron filings, which rusted.

MoD provided the Prime with our Company’s name as we supplied the existing T Boats and V Boats with the loudspeakers they currently use in their Bridge permanently mounted outside the pressure hull.

The Prime also required the loudspeaker to perform as both a loudspeaker and a microphone in the dive chambers and in the Special Forces Payload Bays (SFPB). Further, they required the loudspeaker/microphone to be a form-fit and function replacement for the original loudspeaker.

We knew that our loudspeaker had been originally designed to act as a microphone, although it was not used as such in the fleet at that time. Also, since the transformer bringing the operating voltage to 9V RMS could be mounted inside the pressure hull and did not need to be mounted in the loudspeaker body, we had all the necessary information to proceed with the project.

By May 2011, we had a prototype design and confirmed several functional parameters, including the loudspeaker functioning under pressure and acting as a microphone.

In July 2011, we had a functioning prototype in aluminium that we could take to HMS Ambush in Barrow-in Furness, where the Communications Engineering Officer swapped our prototype loudspeaker for the original underperforming one. The effect was immediate. The commands issued became easily heard. The Officer’s judgment was “Just the job!”.

October 2011 had us produce the first loudspeaker in Naval Bronze. We tested our product to all of the requirements, and in November 2011, we sent our first tranche of loudspeakers for the Astute Class submarines. This loudspeaker is now standard on all Astute and Dreadnought Class submarines and is being reviewed by other Naval Primes worldwide.

In this case study, Vitavox’s products stand out for their clarity, reliability, durability, and ease of integration. These qualities have enhanced the operational capabilities of naval submarines and significantly contributed to the safety and efficiency of underwater missions. The success stories of Vitavox in these real-world applications underscore the Company’s role as a leader in advancing naval communication technologies.
