Submarine Loudspeakers

WATERTIGHT, PRESSURE-TIGHT SUBMARINE LOUDSPEAKERS
NSN 5965-99-924-9409, our part no. VQ79558

TSubmarine Loudspeakershe Vitavox watertight, pressure-tight submarine loudspeakers (NSN 5965-99-924-9409) are a cone type unit designed for use in external positions on submarines such as on the conning tower.

Maximum power output as a loudspeaker is 4W.

These naval submarine loudspeakers are individually pressure tested as watertight to 69 bar. Each loudspeaker is x-rayed to ensure casting composition and integrity. The loudspeaker consists of a pressure-tight chamber formed by a body casting of high tensile naval bronze (Nickel Aluminium Bronze NES 747 Pt2) and a hinged cover of similar material. There is an outer chamber which houses the speaker cone. The speaker unit is clamped to the inside of the hinged cover and the transformer is mounted inside the body casting.

The unit must be mounted on a vertical support with its cover hinge uppermost to ensure efficient drainage of the speaker cone. The unit is secured to its support by means of three lugs cast on the outside of the body casting which is also fitted with a cable gland. This gland, when covered externally with a rubber sheath, provides a pressure-tight entry for the cable. Cast on the outside of the hinged cover is a protruding section with a flange which, with the grille, forms the outer chamber.

The pressure-tight joint between the body casting and cover is made by a joint-less rubber ring held firmly in position by grooves in the cover face and compressed by eight cover securing bolts engaging in tapped holes in the body casting. The pressure-tight joint between the outer chamber and the pressure-tight inner chamber is made by a rubber disc being forced back on a seating by external pressures. The outer chamber is open to the sea.
